Conflicts: MathNews vs. Imprints
Below is an e-mail sent by the Imprint Editor-in-Chief, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, to MathNEWS Editor, Joseph Collins. It was also CCed to MathSoc and FedS.
=================================================================
It has come to my attention that you made some defamatory statement about my person in your publication, MathNews published 11th June 2010. The libelous statement that has attracted my attention and concern is the phrase "E is for Idiot". According to Ontario's laws on defamation to which you are bound,
This missive is to inform you that I have contacted my lawyers on the possibility of seeking a civil suit on grounds of defamation against MathNews and yourself Joseph Collins. They have informed me that this civil action will be in order and have advised me to join the Mathematics Society as a defendant in this suit with the understanding is that they are primarily responsible for MathNews' funding.
Nevertheless, as much as I would love to make an example of your professional irresponsibility, I am obliged by some sense of legal responsibility and common decency (which I must state, you did not have the sense to show my person) to give you a chance at redemption.
I have two demands, the terms of which must be fulfilled within twenty-four hours of the time stamp on this email otherwise MathNews and the Mathematics Society will be served with our statement of claim as defendants in this defamatory civil suit.
First, Mathnews will publish as a retraction in a public medium under its control, of which I will determine its propriety, the exact wording of the text as it is provided below or communicate its intention to undertake a similar action in the near future, the action of which I must approve.
In our June 11th, 2010 publication, MathNews writer, Joseph Collins in a short piece titled 'Attention Imprint President' directly referred to Iyinoluwa "E" Aboyeji, who presently serves as President of Imprint Publications, as an "Idiot". MathNews accepts that this piece should never have been published. We sincerely regret the error in judgement that resulted in this action and would like to tender our unreserved apologies to Mr Aboyeji Iyinoluwa, Imprint Publications and all other persons involved for any offence and distress caused.
Second, we will be requiring that you pull off your website the particular issue where the libelous statement was made, until you can include an edited version that omits the offending statement.
On a more personal note, please, do not be deceived by any ill adviced arguments to consider this statement an empty threat. This is not an empty threat. If the above conditions are not met within the stipulated time limits, the relevant legal documentation will be filed with the courts as soon as they open on Monday. As much I am an ardent supporter of various forms of student participation particularly with respect to student press, I believe that should never become an excuse for anything less than professional conduct. |
